Doordarshan Plans A Health Channel

August 16th, 2007

Doordarshan, India’s national broadcaster has plans to launch a health channel. It is ostensibly meant to help medical students in India. The annual cost: 180 crores. The government will amend the Cable Television Netowrks(regulation) Act of 1995 to make it compulsory for cable operators to carry the channel.

However, merely forcing the cable operators to carry the channel doesn’t guarantee eyeballs. While no details on the programming is forthcoming, it is safe to assume–considering Doordarshan’s past efforts–that it will not exactly set the Ganges on fire. More importantly, what about infrastructure? How many medical schools in India have T.V’s in class rooms? In fact, most state medical schools in India lack even the most basic education tools, from cadaver to laboratory materials. In such a sorry scenario, investing 180 crores in a T.V channel hardly makes sense.

Except, of course, it would keep the babus of Doordarshan busy.
