Law is one field which has embraced internet in a big way. It is not only true for sites like Westlaw which facilitate legal research but even individual law firms have their own websites. The site Top lawyersof America attempts to make search for attorneys easier by bringing together attorneys and people looking for legal help. The site aims to aid the ‘’search for a lawyer, information, or legal services in the most efficient way possible”.

The USP of the site is its search engine which allows potential clients to search for lawyers using multiple filters: area of law, keyword,and location. I tried the search engine and its fairly fast. Quite naturally, its far more efficient in returning results in case of metropolitan cities like New York than in smaller towns. Those not so enamored with search engines, can use the left sidebar to browse layers by area of law. The same function can also be performed by the site map which goes one step further by listing attorneys by geographical areas, for example New York Attorney. Here again, it is definitely more beneficial for people looking for attorneys in major towns.

Apart from attorney search, the site offers many other services: Legal research, Ask a lawyers where clients can discuss cases with lawyers, news and events, and publications. It is not clear if research facilities are available to clients as the link seems to unavailable from the main site. If indeed, that is the case, then allowing the general public to access the research facilities would definitely enhance the usefulness of the site. For lawyers, the site allows them to advertise on the site which would give them a prominent position on the sidebar. However, since the listing on the site is paid, it is up to the client to broses through the list of lawyers to find the best match possible. It must be added though that the various search options the site offers helps the client make an informed choice. The site also offers a forum to discuss legal issues. Unfortunately, the forum seems largely defunct.

Over all, the top lawyers of America is an useful site for both clients and lawyers.
